Dystopian settings: The Year of the Rat by Mariana Enriquez and Jorge Alderete
This article presents a discursive-semiotic approach to The Year of the Rat (2020) by Mariana Enriquez and Jorge Alderete. In this proposal, we attempt to reflect on how the creative expression of the authors in this dystopian graphic chronicle offers a fresh perspective on the ordinary aspects of life that problematizes social becoming. Within the context of genre hybridity, through a style that both emulates and deconstructs the objectivity of ontological discourses, science fiction, the fantastic, and horror, the text establishes a juxtaposition of representations and discourses that shape reality. In doing so, it adopts an irreverent, challenging, and critical attitude that highlights the implosion of ancient paradigms in the postmodern era, and prompts the reader to reevaluate their own reality.
